Dr. Fernando Barrera, DDS

Dentist

My dental career started by chance when I enlisted in the US Air Force in 1975. I was hoping to get into computers, but I became a dental assistant. After three years, I decided it was time to go back to school. Those three years were formative in my approach to dental care. I worked with many dentists and saw a wide range of approaches to patient care and comfort. I decided that I should reach my goal of becoming a dentist. I would make dental care as comfortable and pain-free as possible.

Fernando Barrera — Fairbanks, AK — Barrera Dental, PC

I received my undergraduate degree in biology at the University of Southern California (GO Trojans). My dental degree came from the University of California, San Francisco. I returned to the Air Force for 17 more years and retired in 2003. My assignments included Japan, Turkey, and Saudi Arabia. I met my beautiful wife, Kathy, in Albuquerque, and we have been together for over 26 years. I retired at Eielson in 2003 and filled in at different offices before opening my office in 2006 with my dental hygienist wife, Kathy. In 2015 the office was moved to its current location on 21st Ave, near the hospital.

Restorative dentistry is my passion, from just a simple filling or crown to rebuilding a smile or a bite. I also enjoy all the different aspects of dentures, from partial, complete, and implant-retained dentures. I’ve had extensive training in Occlusion, Implants, TMJ issues, and Prosthodontics. I have also attended courses at the Spears Institute and Pankey Institute.

Our motto states,” Your Smile, Our Reward.” The entire team and I feel rewarded when you are happy with your care at our office. When you smile, we think we did our job right.

Kathy Flores

Hygienist

I have been a dental hygienist for over 17 years. I graduated from the University of Texas Health Science Center at the top of my class. I have the privilege of going to work every day and working with the best patients. Not many people love going to work every day, but I am one of the lucky few. I enjoy providing compassionate, comprehensive care to people and changing any negative perspectives they may have from previous experiences. When I’m not working, I am busy taking care of my two dogs and Dr. Barrera, who has been my husband for over 26 years.

Hygienist

I’m originally from Germany but have been in Alaska for over 21 years. I’ve raised two beautiful children and started my career as a dental assistant 16 years ago. I have been working with Dr Barrera for over 11 years and love working with him. I tend to my dog Roxy or ride my Harley when I’m not working. I love Alaska.
